About Us:

The Beginning

Alloway Timber & Builders Merchants is a family business, offering customers a professional and knowledgeable approach whilst retaining the core values of personal service, that has resulted in the success of the business.

The story began in 1971, as Joe Alloway (senior) founded Alloway Timber Southern LTD (ATS). The business started from the back garden of his parents’ house in Fulham and in 1973 he expanded by opening our Putney Branch, where we still trade from. In 2003, sister company Putney Builders Merchants was opened to allow us to support our customers’ projects from start to finish. In 2023, we merged both brands to form Alloway Timber & Builders Merchants, bringing the two businesses together to allow us to simplify our offering to customers by ensuring all products are available under one roof. Today, the company remains a family business under the stewardship of Joe Snr’s two sons, Joe & Peter Alloway.

Alloway Timber & Builders Merchants now trades from 5 sites (Kingston-upon-Thames, Byfleet, Cheam, Mitcham, Putney & Putney Heavyside) offering an impressive range covering softwoods, MDF, hardwoods, skirtings, and architraves, to aggregates, blocks, bricks, and lintels. In essence, all the materials you need for your construction project from start to finish, delivered via our extensive fleet including crane lorries.

Our ‘Staff’ or as we prefer to call them our Colleagues

The key to our success has been our colleagues, many have worked with the company for over 20 years and are considered part of the family. Having longstanding colleagues involved in the business for multiple years ensures we bring consistency as well as knowledge and experience to our customers and most importantly client relationships, indeed many of our customers now consider our colleagues their personal friends.

How We Operate

Health & Safety is an extremely important part of our business and is at the forefront of every single ATS operation. We adopt a best practice approach, exceeding the minimum standards expected, to ensure the safety of our staff, customers, and any visitors to our sites or when our vehicles are offloading.

Our extensive fleet includes multiple types of vehicles; from transit vans, lorry mounted cranes all the way to our specialist Loft Loader vehicles, allowing versatility with our deliveries to best suit our customers’ needs and within the time frames required.

Our highly specialised Loft Loader offers the complete loft conversion service so we can deliver all your materials directly to the roof, whether it is insulation, steel, or timbers - our high extending crane can deliver all in one go to the most inaccessible places.

Our Products

Our relationship with the Builders Merchant Federation (BMF), along with our association with the National Buying Group (NBG) and the National  Merchants Buying Society (NMBS) provides us with the buying power to compete with the National Builders Merchants and allows us to keep our prices extremely competitive.

In line our environmental policy, all branches have achieved full FSC® and PEFC chain of custody certification which ensures our timber and sheet materials have been produced from well-managed forests and are sourced responsibly. Quality is high on the priority list for our timber products, whilst retaining competitive pricing, which is why most of our timber is stored under cover away from the elements. We also offer a timber cutting service at our Putney and Byfleet branches for sheet materials.

For larger or more diverse projects, our dedicated Central Sales team offer our customers a service from start to finish, everything from plan take-offs, down to the finishing details to truly help our customers realise their ambitions. Their years of experience allows them to carry out brick matches to ensure that new and old go together seamlessly as well as dealings in a variety of sectors allowing even the most obscure items to be sourced and purchased.
